How Ambitious People Think

Ambitious

There’s one thing I know for sure about ambitious people: they have a personal vision for success.  In fact, Google Dictionary describes ambition as “eagerly desirous of achieving or obtaining success, power, wealth, a specific goal, etc.”

In other words, ambition and the ability to define personal success go hand in hand.

Easier said than done, right?  Defining success can be the most difficult part.  Definitions can change during one’s lifetime and can come in many forms (not always tied to money).  But, motivated people seem to know what success is at any given moment, and focus intently on getting there.

Ambitious People Think about…Goals

A friend of mine recently ran for city council.  She contemplated running for years, but once she actually made the decision and set her goal, it was like the green light signal at the Grand Prix.  She had a singular vision to reach her goal, systematically, purposely.  Her hard work, countless hours, and relentless energy were truly inspiring.  She won, by the way.

“Being a big picture thinker allows you to see a project as the sum of its parts. Creating a roadmap for a project allows you to see where potential obstacles might be and take action to prevent them” (Learning Mind). Everyone can benefit from big picture thinking–at work, in careers, and even when hiring.

Ambitious People Think about…Learning New Things

It’s easy to become complacent in business or in any profession.  You learn your job, do it well, fall into a routine, and kind of coast through a solid career.  But, I’d argue that ambitious people refuse to live in a state of boredom for very long.  Ambitious people HAVE to learn new things.  Think about co-workers who you would call ambitious.  Are they seeking out conferences, classes, new opportunities to grow?

Ambitious People Think about…the Future

Entrepreneur Peter Thiel says, “The most successful businesses have an idea for the future that’s very different from the present – and that’s not fully valued.”  It’s hard to think about a future that is very different from the present, but that is how ambitious people think.  They imagine the end game, the finish line, and can see past the here and now.

Ambitious People Think Positively

It takes positive thinking to image big dreams and to go for them.  It also takes a positive outlook about oneself.  Ambitious people seem to know how to squelch  self-doubt and the obstacles in favor of a bigger goal.
